4 Steps to Creating a KILLER Digital Strategy

To be blunt...creating a digital strategy, or hold up, any strategy, for that matter, is like planning a holiday. It helps to:

  1. Know where you are going,
  2. Know where you are right now,
  3. Understand what separates you from your desired path, and
  4. Determine how to get there from here in the most effective way.

Let's go into these steps in a little more detail.

1. Know where you are going.

How are you going to get anywhere if you don't know where you are going? To decide on your path, consider how various digital touch-points – email marketing, social media, paid search, and so on – will help your business accomplish it's near term business goals and longer term strategies.

Hold a strategy session and bring your A-game. Get viewpoints from around your peers. Combine them with industry and competitor research, knowledge of your customers, and analysis of digital trends to define your path to digital success.

2. Know where you are right now.


Take stock. With your path in mind,  examine and document the relevant aspects of your current business set-up and digital agility. An honest and straightforward assessment of your current state will include more than a listing of your websites and digital technology projects.

Also...remember to look at where your team is right now. Do they have the skills they need to turn your business into a digital powerhouse?

3. Understand what separates you from your desired path.

What's stopping you? Now that you know where you want to go and where you are, you can figure out what's missing from your path to success. Create a focused gap analysis by determining how the various aspects of your current state need to change in order for you to reach your goals and objectives.

4. Determine how to get there in the most effective way.

Start planning. Have a planning session with your team to determine the most effective steps to combat any unknowns or gaps you have identified in getting from A (where you are now) to B (where you want to go). Document the plan and add timelines and milestones to the document to make your planned path come to life.

There to have all planning, just needs a little bit of structure.
